Making Lines and Columns for Worksheets using Word

How do I create lines on worksheets for the students to write on?

There are many ways to add lines in Word but I find the easiest is using the Underline option and tab on the keyboard.

To make lines for students to write answers on

  1. Click on the icon
  2. Hold tab key down to make the line as long (or as many rows) as you need.

To make gaps in the lines e.g. to make two or three columns of lines

  1. Click on the icon
  2. Hold tab key down to make a short line
  3. Click on again to turn it off
  4. Press tab key to make a space
Repeat these steps again to complete the first line.

Highlight the line and copy (Ctrl+C) and then paste (Ctrl+V) to make as many rows as you need.

To change the size of the line spacing

  1. Highlight the rows
  2. Right Click
    - Format - Paragraph (Office 2007 - Home - Paragraph)
    - Line spacing
  3. Select most appropriate (1.5 is ideal for Yr 3+, double for younger students).
